Important Information

Reading

We are passionate about developing life-long readers. Every child in Oak will be given a banded reading book which is our reading to learn book and can also choose a book to enjoy for pleasure. The children are encouraged to take these home daily so that they can practise their reading. Please ensure that your child is reading little but often at home, as well as in school. We encourage you (or your child) to sign their Reading Records to indicate that they have read at home, either with an adult or independently. Please aim to sign your Reading Record at least X3 weekly. Reading books and records need to be brought to school daily.

Spellings/Homework

Spelling is taught through the Spelling Shed scheme and children use the app or online platform to practise every week for homework. Children are set games per week on the app.  The children also stick their spellings at the back of their reading record. Each Monday, your child will be tested on their spellings and they will be given their new spellings/homework for the following week.

This term we are continuing Learning by Question for children in Oak Class. This will be set weekly by Miss Brierley. The homework is designed to consolidate children's learning outside of the classroom and will always link to topic which is being taught at the time. Children can access LBQ using their login and passwords provided by school. If your child misplaces their login, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Brierley.

Throughout Lower Key Stage 2, the children will gain a better understanding of multiplication and division in their math’s lessons. However, it is important that they regularly practise their times tables at school and home to secure their knowledge.

Each child has a log in to TT Rockstars which they can use to practise their times tables at home. Their password should be at the front of their reading records.

In the summer term, the year 4 children will take part in a multiplication check which is completed by all year 4 pupils across the country. They have 6 seconds to answer each question and have to answer 25 questions in total.

Learning their times tables gives the children a fantastic start as they move into year 5 as the curriculum in Upper Key Stage 2 relies heavily upon on them.

Please encourage your child to practise their times tables at home each week as it will massively help their progress in all areas of maths.

P.E.

Our PE day is Monday. Children should come to school wearing their P.E. kit. Please ensure that the PE kit is appropriate for any weather as our lessons often take place outside.

Children in Oak Class will swim each week this term. This will take place every Wednesday at KAL Holmfirth Swimming Baths. We bring our swimming kits including a swimming cap to school then travel by coach to the centre. These sessions will continue up to February half term.

Music

Our music lessons this term will be taught by Mr Mace and we are learning to play the ukulele. We warm up by singing various songs then work as a team to sing rounds. For the final part of lesson, we learn how to play different chords on the ukulele.

If your child would like to borrow a ukulele so they can practise at home then please ask Miss Brierley for a letter.
